This week, the media has been filled with stories how radical “astro-turf,” “right-wing mobs” are disrupting town hall meetings being held on the government’s plan to socialize America’s health care.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi has even gone so far as to infer the protestors are “nazis”.
The AFL-CIO’s blog is stating about those protesting the government takeover:
The extremist fringe of the anti-health care reform movement—with a wink and a nod from more mainstream health care opponents—is using mob rule to disrupt town hall meetings and community forums set for the congressional recess.
This is laughingly hypocritical of Ms. Pelosi and her union bedfellows to decry the town hall protestors when these are the very tactics unions have used for decades.
As an example, while the AFL-CIO, Pelosi and others are berating the town hall protestors, the Washington Post reports this:
About 50 protesters picketed Mayor Adrian M. Fenty Wednesday night outside the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, where Fenty’s fraternity is holding an international meeting.
A coalition of labor unions, tenants advocates and community organizers wanted to bring attention to the recent layoffs of government workers, the sale of public property to private developers and other issues, said Ruth Castel-Branco, an organizer for Jobs for Justice.
“We were really showing our displeasure with the lack of transparency,” Castel-Branco said….
“For us, we see this as another opportunity for the mayor to raise his national profile,” she said. “We want to make sure they (fraternity members) understand
the impact of the policies he’s been pushing in the District.” [Emphasis added.]
And, of course, let us not forget the inter-union fight last year between the Service Employees Internationals Union and the California Nurses Association when the SEIU bused in “mobs” of protestors to disrupt a Labor Notes conference.
This particular “astro-turf” protest resulted in one woman going to the hospital and a SEIU protestor dying of a heart attack.
So, the next time you hear someone pushing socialized medicine decrying the tactics of the town hall protestors, you can just tell them that the town hall protestors learned it from the masters of astro-turf protests: The unions and the radical left.
